A well-planned retirement will give you confidence as you head toward retirement, and freedom to live the life you want when you are no longer working. Saving for your retirement throughout your working life is essential for gaining such confidence and freedom, and even more important if you wish to leave assets to the people and causes you love.

We develop a personalized, structured retirement plan that you can begin implementing now, to ensure the type of retirement you want and the legacy you want to leave, through these services:

  • Understanding what type of retirement you would like, what you would like to be doing in retirement, such as travelling or taking on new hobbies, and what level of income you will need to support such a lifestyle, adjusted for inflation
  • Determining how much, if anything, you would like to leave to the people and causes you love
  • Determining how much saving you will need to do now to support your desired lifestyle in retirement, and to have the assets left at the end of your life that you would like to leave to the people and causes you love

  • Developing a personalized retirement plan that takes you from your current situation to your desired level of retirement savings, by growing your retirement funds through a variety of saving, investment, and risk management strategies

5. Strategic Tax

Planning

We will help you to reduce the amount of taxes you pay over your lifetime, which can have a significant impact on your ability to accumulate life-long wealth and leave a legacy to the ones you love. Our tax planning services include*:

  • Pre- and post-tax investment planning: We help you determine when and how to invest your pre-tax dollars, such as in traditional IRAs and 401(k)s, versus your post-tax dollars, such as in Roth IRAs and brokerage accounts. This helps you reduce the taxes you pay over your lifetime, and maximizes the growth of your assets.
  • Income tax planning: We help you to plan ahead for various types of income, such as from dividends, interest, capital gains, annuity income payments, retirement benefits, and inheritances, each of which has specific tax implications. We help you to position yourself whenever possible in vehicles that carry lower tax burdens.
  • Tax-efficient retirement planning: We help you to structure your retirement income distributions in ways that reduce taxes, stretch out your savings as long as possible, and maximize your monthly retirement income.
  • Legacy and estate planning: We help you to build strategies for transferring your wealth to your intended beneficiaries in the most tax-efficient way, to eliminate or reduce the taxes they will have to pay on the funds they inherit from you.

Depending on the complexity of your financial situation, we may re review your tax return annually and use it to identify opportunities, such as:

  • Optimizing benefits if you are a W-2 employee
  • Helping you to strategically manage your capital gains

6. Education Planning

In addition to planning for and investing in your own financial success, as a parent, you may also wish to help your children be more successful in life by planning and investing for their future education. Given the high cost of higher education, and that its costs are rising about twice as fast as the cost of other common goods and services, starting a college savings plan for your children as early as possible will help you to be better-equipped to assist them when these costs come due, without unbalancing your own financial situation at that time.

You may also wish to plan and invest for your children’s primary or secondary education, or own future education goals. We help you create customized education funding strategies for your children and yourself that align with your overall financial goals, through the following services:

  • Understanding the education goals you have for your children, at what type of educational institution you would like to support their studies, and what portion of the total costs you wish to cover for them
  • Projecting the costs of this support, how much you would need to have saved by the time your child begins the study program, adjusted for the high inflation rate specific to higher education, and how much you would need to save monthly to get to these levels
  • Understanding your own education goals, timeframe for staring your study program, projected costs of the program, and how much you need to save to get ready for it
  • Providing a customized education plan that aligns with your comprehensive financial plan and guides you to the best and most tax-efficient vehicles for education savings. These could include 529 Plans, Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), and Custodial accounts
  • Strategically allocating and managing your education investment accounts to maximize growth and manage risk, according to your risk tolerance and the timeframe for your children or you to start the study programs

7. Strategic Risk Management

and Insurance Planning

Strategic risk management and insurance planning helps to safeguard your wealth, reduce risk, and support your shorter- and longer-term financial stability. As part of our personalized, comprehensive financial planning process, we assess the risks to your own and your family’s financial well-being, and to your ability to save and invest for your shorter-and longer-term goals in the event of a disability, passing away early, or needing long-term care. We will also assess your risk of, and personal concern about, running out of money during retirement, which is often mitigated through annuities.

We will analyze any existing insurance products and annuities you may have, and how well and efficiently they are serving you and providing the needed protection. If we deem that an insurance or annuity product is in your best interest and will play an important role in your comprehensive financial plan, we will research and identify the most beneficial and cost-efficient policies among the many possible plan features and insurance providers in the market.

Possible insurance products that could be included in your personalized, comprehensive financial plan include:

  • Disability insurance
  • Term life Insurance
  • Permanent/whole-life insurance – fixed, variable, variable universal life (VUL), universal life (UL), and indexed universal life (IUL)
  • Long-term care insurance
  • Annuities – fixed and variable
  • See the Annuities and Insurance Primer in the Resources section for explanations of these products (provide link to the Primer)

We provide the following services related to risk management and insurance planning:

  • Review of existing policies
  • Needs and suitability analysis for disability insurance, life insurance, long-term care insurance, and annuities
  • Establishing Health Savings Accounts
  • Medicare advice and referral to Medicare insurance brokers

If you are a business owner, we may suggest insurance products to protect your business from the sudden loss of an owner or a critical employee due to death or disability:

  • Buy-sell agreements
  • Key person insurance
  • Disability insurance

8. Legacy and Estate Planning

A clear, legally valid, and up-to-date estate plan ensures that your family will be supported after you pass away, and that your wealth goes as you intended, to your loved ones and the organizations and causes you wish to support. Without such a plan, your assets may be subject to probate court, unnecessary taxes, and the actions of unintended recipients or people who did not understand or value your intentions. We help you to create a clear, legally sound legacy strategy that protects your loved ones and honors your intentions and values, through the following services*:

  • Ensuring that your investment accounts are property titled and have the appropriate ownership structure, and that your beneficiary designations are in place, up-to-date, and aligned with your intentions regarding who should receive your account assets when you pass away
  • Reviewing your existing estate plan and documents, such as trusts and wills
  • Helping you to understand the basic estate planning documents and what they do – wills, trusts, durable power of attorney, advance healthcare directive (living will), beneficiary designations, and guardianship designations
  • Helping you to build an estate plan through a partner organization or referral to a local attorney, if you don’t already have an estate plan in place
  • Partnering with attorneys and corporate trustees as needed to implement or design trusts, manage complex estate plans, and identify areas of opportunity
  • Helping you to minimize estate taxes
  • Facilitating your charitable giving
